First Bible of her Own
Doing services at the local nursing home on Sunday afternoons often causes me to have mixed emotions. I tend to need little reminders that ministry there is necessary and rewarding. This month I got one. On the Sunday I did the service, the Bible lesson lead to an application that emphasized reading the Scriptures. Knowing they may have difficulty reading the small print found in many Bibles, I offered to provide a large-print Bible for anyone who would like one. Two ladies raised their hands to say they wanted one.
Weeks later, the case of Bibles arrived, and I took two over to the home. As I gave one of the ladies her new large-print Bible, she took it carefully, with a reverence. As she held it, she kept repeating, “Thank you so much,” over and over. As we talked further, she mentioned that this Bible was the first Bible she had ever had! She’s in a nursing home. She’s over seventy years old. She’s lived in South Dakota all her life, and yet she never had a Bible of her own. I was excited to know she now had one, but distressed to learn that never before had she owned her own Bible. I’m looking forward to more visits to discuss passages with her.
